Allergy Immunology

Overview
Allergy/Immunology specialists provide evaluation of asthma, allergic rhinitis and sinusitis, chronic otitis, chronic urticaria, refractory atopic dermatitis, and food and drug allergies. Diagnostic procedures including skin testing, pulmonary function testing, RAST testing, and allergy immunotherapy injections.

Clinical Activities
The Division provides outpatient care for 120 - 150  patients each week, with 95% of patients children and adolescents, and 5% of patients adults. Diagnostic tests performed include pulmonary function testing, skin testing, food challenges, and penicillin skin testing.

Educational Activities
Cynthia Kelly, MD, Jude Taylor-Fishwick, Tracy Trolan, MD, and Melinda Boltz,  implemented the PACE program in Hampton Roads (February 20 & 27, 2003 at CHKD; May 14 & 20, 2003 at Riverside Regional Medical Center).  The PACE program is a nationally recognized, multi-faceted seminar to improve physician awareness, attitudes, communication and therapeutic skills for asthma.  The content has shown to be effective in improving long-term patient outcomes.

The Division provides Pediatric Lectures, mentorship for the pediatric residents, and clinical instruction for rotations of residents and 3rd year medical students.
