Cardiology

The Division of Cardiology specializes in providing state-of-the-art inpatient, outpatient, and consultive care. Specialists provide health care services for a full range of pediatric cardiovascular disorders, including congenital heart disorders, rheumatic heart disease, hyperlipidemia, Kawasaki's disease, syncope, cardiomyopathy, myocarditis, hypertension, transplantation cardiology and arrhythmia evaluation. A complete range of studies are available, including exercise testing, Holter monitoring and nuclear cardiology testing.

The Division is one of the largest centers for Pediatric Cardiology care in Virginia in terms of patient volume. The division allocates at least 50% of its daily activity to the care of outpatients with an office at Children's Hospital of The King's Daughters and two off-site satellite offices. In addition, an outreach clinic on the Eastern Shore is staffed monthly.

Over 300 cardiac catheterizations are done yearly. A large majority of these are interventional catheterizations consisting of state-of-the-art equipment and technology used to cure patients without resorting to surgery. A new Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory was opened in the early spring of 2002 at Children's Hospital of The King's Daughters.

The Division performed over 3,500 two-dimensional and transesophageal echoes in the past year. This consisted of outpatient, inpatient and the Catheterization Lab to help augment the interventional catheterizations performed by the Division.

The Division also serves as one of two groups in the state supplying expertise in pediatric electrophysiology which includes the placement of pacemakers, electrophysiologic catheterization and radio frequency ablations.
