The Division of Endocrinology specialists
provide a comprehensive range of diagnosis and treatment
programs for infants, children and adolescents with conditions
or diseases of the endocrine system.
- Consultations, recommendations and long-term follow-up
for various disturbances are available.
- Disorders of sexual development of the thyroid, adrenal
and parathyroid glands; hypoglycemia; hirsutism; menstrual
disorders and disorders of bone metabolism/formation
(including rickets) are evaluated and treated.
- Comprehensive management of children with diabetes is
provided.
- Education, long-term management and psychosocial support
of insulin-dependent diabetic patients are emphasized.
The Division's outpatient programs include
endocrinology, diabetes and adolescent, endocrine clinics. A
total of over 3,500 clinic visits per year are made. These
include private referrals from pediatric practitioners and
referrals from other CHKD clinics. Included in this total are
referrals from health departments through the Children's
Specialty Services (CSS). The Division is a contractor with the
State for CSS, endocrinology and diabetes patients.
The Inpatient Program is responsible for at
least 100 admissions per year for children with diabetes or
children with endocrine disorders that require diagnostic
work-up. Consultations on another 200 patients per year are
requested by other services.
The Division has an ongoing contract with the
City of Norfolk to provide health care for adolescents at the
Norfolk Detention Home and covers a 15-bed children and 15-bed
adolescent unit at Lake Taylor Hospital. All these children and
adolescents are brain-injured or chronically ill with secondary
mental retardation of varying degrees. Average bed census at
Lake Taylor Hospital runs at 25 children and adolescents.
