The Division of Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine
specialists offer consultation, assessment, emergency and
continuing care services for premature and critically ill
infants, as well as long-term follow-up of Neonatal Intensive
Care Unit (NICU) patients and inpatient neonatal consultation at
area hospitals.
The division, in conjunction with the Division
of Maternal-Fetal Medicine, serves as the regional perinatal
referral center for Eastern Virginia and North Carolina. The
referral area extends from as far north as the Eastern Shore of
Virginia, westward towards Franklin and Suffolk, and as far
south as eastern North Carolina. Within this referral area,
there are slightly over 30,000 deliveries each year and the
majority of high-risk mothers and infants are transported to
Sentara Norfolk General Hospital and CHKD for their high-risk
care. Active outreach education programs occur under the
direction of the Neonatal/Perinatal Outreach Center of Virginia
and North Carolina.
The division members are frequently consulted by
obstetricians and perinatologists for prenatal counseling, both
on an emergency basis for inpatients who delivered prematurely
and for other patients classified as high-risk.
The Division also supervises a Neonatal
Follow-up Clinic where high-risk graduates from neonatal
nurseries are followed with careful attention given to growth
and development, as well as, medical problems.
