Research Interests
Current research activities focus on the diagnosis, epidemiology, immunology and prevention of viral gastroenteritis, particularly rotavirus, calicivirus and astrovirus illness. Active research grants involve collaborations with investigators in several countries and funding comes from national and international competitive awards. Most studies involve large, intensely monitored populations from which unique answers to research questions can be gleaned. For example, a recently completed multi-center study of all children hospitalized for diarrhea, vomiting and/or fever, with collection of a stool specimen and acute blood from the children within 24 hours of hospitalization, has led to a newer understanding of the diversity of clinical features of illnesses caused by the three viruses named above. An important aspect of this new study is that it may lead us to understand what has been called the "diagnostic gap" in severe gastroenteritis. This term refers to the cases in cross-sectional studies that cannot be ascribed to any known pathogen cause, no matter how intensely the symptomatic stool specimens are studied. Work from the multi-center study indicates fairly strongly that the cases in the diagnostic gap are infected with common pathogens, but excrete the pathogen at levels lower than can be detected with the best assays.

All of these studies are meant to advance the field of viral gastroenteritis, a syndrome known to cause about 800,000 deaths each year in children and recognized as one of the 10 major health issues worldwide on any such list (WHO, World Bank, and so forth).

I am happy to communicate with anyone about these interests.
