Welcome
from the Chair
|
The
faculty members of the Department of Pediatrics at Eastern Virginia
Medical School are firmly committed to providing an enriching
educational experience for medical students, residents and fellows. The
Department has a proud tradition of excellence in education and provides
a diversity of clinical, educational, and research opportunities.
Our Department emphasizes three important components of our Residency
program; education, scholarly activities, and service. Our principal
emphasis, clearly, is to provide our residents with a broad education in
clinical pediatrics. We strive to instill an atmosphere of
eagerness and enthusiasm for learning and inquiry. We
encourage an evidence-based approach with critical analysis of therapies
in order to assess validity and effectiveness. Our faculty members
directly mentor residents to attain the requisite clinical and
intellectual skills that modern pediatric medicine demands.

Our Residency program provides both the breadth and the depth of pediatric
experiences that prepare our graduates for success whether they plan on
fellowship programs or plan to directly enter primary care arena. An indication
of that balance is that approximately one-third to one-half of our residents
enter fellowship training each year at top fellowship programs across the
country.
Our residents also must
become teachers to students, fellow residents and, most importantly, to their
patients. Ample opportunities are given to permit our residents to become
confident and skilled clinician-educators.
Our second goal is to provide our residents with the tools and support system to
engage in scholarly activities which includes clinical and “bench” research,
novel educational approaches, and community educational programs in an
atmosphere of collegiality emphasizing openness of communication and respect.
And thirdly, we strongly believe that our graduates must become advocates for
children’s health in our community, our nation and the world. We provide
our residents with opportunities to engage in a wide variety of service
activities in order to foster a lifelong commitment to service.
While achieving these goals, your residency must be personally as well as
professionally rewarding. You must have time to have fun! One
of the most enjoyable features of pediatricians is their willingness to laugh
and live life to the fullest. Your personal life should not be put on
“hold” during your residency.
Our mission is to teach not only the science of pediatrics but also the art of
pediatrics.
I warmly welcome your interest in our Department. I invite you to read
through the information on our website, and especially to visit us at Children's
Hospital of The King's Daughters, which is an outstanding facility.
Please feel free to write me or
email me if there questions I may answer for you.
