The PL-1 year provides hands-on experiences in both inpatient and outpatient settings. "Interns" are entrusted with the direct care of patients admitted to the inpatient areas and take active roles in developing patient treatment plans. While on call, they will be the first to evaluate and initiate appropriate interventions for patients experiencing problems. Senior residents are in-house and readily available to help with patient care, to provide back-up and to answer questions. All PL-1 residents rotate through community pediatricians' offices to learn the medical and business aspects of office pediatrics.

The PL-2 and PL-3 years focus on continued development of clinical and supervisory skills through continued practical experience. Second-year residents invest just over 25% of their time on inpatient and nursery areas as supervisors while 33% on subspecialty electives, in addition to rotating through the pediatric intensive care unit (PICU) and emergency department. Third-year residents spend time as supervisors in all the inpatient areas in addtion to the emergency department, PICU, and subspecialty electives.

Residents receive 3 weeks of PAID vacation plus as additional week for a PAID holiday break (Christmas or New Year's).
